A blog about a variety of things (politics, equality, personal stories, things that are important to me). The point of this blog is to shine a spotlight on a specific issue or cause. I also welcome discussion on all of my writings. After all, expression is a two way street. I just ask for people to be respectful and mature when joining the discussion. Happy reading, and most importantly, happy expressing.

Spotlight

Gloria Steinem & Feminists Vs. Evil, Stupid Men?

I just watched the documentary on Gloria Steinem. I must say there are a few things I did not know about this important figure in the women’s movement. However, as with everything else, her work deserves both support and criticism. Let’s start with the positive.

Her aim on most of her work has been a move to exemplify that women are human and are underrepresented. Over the years, women have certainly become more represented in many industries and sectors in society. She was a supporter of Hillary Clinton, which I was, as well. As a man, I knew that Hillary Clinton was going to be a force to be reckoned with around the world. I knew exactly what she wanted to do in the U.S. and I was prepared to help elect her into the Presidency. I felt it was time to take a chance on a woman to be our leader in the same way that Britain and Germany have in their countries. Of course, Obama’s biggest obstacle was, in fact, Hillary Clinton. While Obama is now the President, after all of the negative experiences this country has had under Obama, I wished the Democrats had chosen Hillary instead. As stated in previous articles, my ideology is independent due, in large part, to a great friend of mine who said: “One must make their own analysis and not be institutionalized (in other words, don’t follow a bandwagon).” I have held on to this belief for years and have supported both Democrat and Republican candidates based on my own survey of the candidate’s ideology and actions made in their past.

However, in the case of Gloria Steinem, I disapprove of her clear lack of involvement for men’s rights. After all, if cooperation and equality is what women want, it seems her view is to chastise and emasculate men in the process, while totally ignoring the increase in crimes against men and boys committed by women. As I said in earlier articles, no one gender is better than the other. No one is an inanimate object and no one is be considered a second class citizen. Most importantly, she provides no incentives or even wants involvement from men. This is most disappointing. If she truly wished to see changes, it would have been better to incentivize or make attractive this viewpoint to men, in the process. To date, her clear failure to denounce gender biases against men is most appalling. Gloria Steinham is partly to blame for Hollywood’s claim that all men are worthless, animals, and stupid. Certainly, if Hollywood made that case about women, there would be screeching cries of outrage.

From the standpoint of religion, Christianity does make it clear that the man is the head of the household. Why? First, it was a far different time back then. Based on what we know from biblical times, there was times of great corruption, poverty, transitioning governments, and largely agricultural societies. Because most of the world had transitioning governments, corruption, or complete anarchy, it is clear why the men were considered the head of their household. Women had to be protected from other men and criminal elements. A man was charged with protecting and providing for “his” family because women’s rights simply did not exist in biblical times. At no point does the Bible condone violence, murder, rape, or even adultery. The Bible, does, however, indicate that women are very special and are human beings with various rights and responsibilities of their own in support of making things work in a time of clear and utter chaos in the times of the Bible. While times have changed for the better and the worse (in some aspects), the central theme of the Bible has always been one of love and honor. Everyone agrees there is no honor in violence, rape, murder, theft, and many others. Not a surprise, the Feminist movement largely misses the point of bridging the philosophical gap because it is not based on basic philosophies. There is no honor in treating people as a second class citizen, yet, the very conventional thought of feminist theory would rather have men be treated as second class citizens and emasculated. There is no honor in not condoning true equality and certainly no honor in not accepting the many differences among people and genders.

It is my sincere hope that Gloria Steinem examine and help prevent negativity to both genders not just of the female persuasion. The current sphere of feminism today has become convoluted and totally antagonistic to men. How is this acceptable?

Obama's Gender War?

While the Republican party is close to sealing the deal with Mitt Romney as their nominee, the focus is now shifting to Obama, as it should. So, let’s take a look at what happened this past week.

He pandered to the women vote indicating that women are not a special interest group and not monolithic. My question is: If that were true, why the summit on Women and the Economy? My issue is not the fact that he was speaking to this demographic, but, the fact that he even needs to do this. It is quite clear he received a considerable percentage of women votes in the previous election cycle. Why is the women vote more important this time around? Of course, one could speculate that he is losing traction among women, which is why we, quite suddenly, hear in the media today that Republicans do not care about women’s rights. How absurd! Not only is it completely illogical that such a conundrum exists in the Republican party but to provide no real example of this deficiency is quite disingenuous. If we are to believe that, then why did John McCain select Sarah Palin as his running mate? It makes no sense in the equation. Now, yes, I know that there is a movie about the McCain-Palin partnership, but, of course, Hollywood is always synonymous with fiction. The reality is Sarah Palin herself has already said many times that she has no regrets running with John McCain. She could have easily have said the opposite at anytime.

So, to me, the President should have had this discussion with men as the high unemployment rate has affected them the most.

Will he do that?

Opinion: Trayvon Martin

Ok, you knew this day was coming. There is no way I am going to let a ferocious media firestorm remain unchecked.

After weeks of racial divisiveness, tirades and vicious war of words, perpetrated by the national news media organizations, it is clear that we may never know what really happened in the case of Trayvon Martin’s death. Out of all the media spin and political posturing by a slew of people, we still do not know enough to make a conclusion based on publicly available data, except that someone was killed. The issue of racial motivation is still up for serious debate.

Aside from the flagrant racial overtones question, which is anyone’s guess at this point, there is a more pressing matter concerning Florida’s unique “Stand Your Ground” law. The law is and should be up for debate not on grounds of racial discrimination but, rather, on how such a law could be applied in most situations. It is clear, again based on the news organizations, that this law is questionable and perhaps a judicial review is warranted in the Florida state courts. I agree that the law does include some very unique items in it. If it were me, I would definitely interview Florida legislators from both sides of the aisle to ascertain various positions on the laws interpretation. It is in this context that we can determine a much better view of this law.

The fact that the Justice Department is opening an inquiry into this case under the guise of racial discrimination leads me to question the real intent. It is clear the circumstances of that day are still not clear at all based on what we know now in the media. In my opinion, the Obama Administration should have considered the available data. The fact that a shooting took place and a minority was killed is not prima facia evidence that a hate crime was committed. In fact, anyone can deduce that anything could have caused that. So, the real perpetrator responsible for all of this is, in fact, the media and the political pundits, as usual. How blatantly irresponsible of them!

My challenge to the Obama Administration is to, instead, probe and study crime rates among the minority groups and determine solutions to the problem. For example, crime rates could conceivably be much higher in areas with concentrations of Hispanics or African-Americans. The government already possesses the necessary resources to geotag such data in its reporting and to study the root causes of these incidents. The idea here is to determine how can our nation make this a better, safer place to live. How can we ensure a better carriage of justice? What is the position of prolific criminologists in this moment in time? All much more valid questions that the Justice Department should study.

Now, let’s talk about the Racial Profiling conference that was held on Capitol Hill before a panel of Democrats. The media had no qualms about allowing remarks degrading Florida’s judicial process and the Police Department. What was supposed to be an honest discussion became nothing more than racially charged polarization. Congress should be ashamed of itself. Our federal, elected representatives have no business discussing this matter further and they certainly have no business calling state agencies incompetent. Such matters on state agencies and police compentency have always been dealt in State and Municipal governments.

My biggest issue was the use of the acronym WWB GC (Walking While Black in a Gated Community). To me, this does not help the situation at all. While I sympathize about the experiences had by many who were discriminated against, my question is: what is the solution? All talk and no solution yields no results.

These are a few of my favorite things (about the President?)

Today marked the 87th anniversary of my Church, quite an incredible feat for any organization and institution. While today was showered with various activities during our service, we were also reminded about how far our country has come from the days of the Church’s inception in 1925. Throughout all of that, we realized that there were good changes throughout our history, as well as negative ones. In the context of today’s discussion, a reflection of United States policy over the past four years, there is no question that good and bad have come to pass. The real question is: Have the bad outweighed the good?

As promised in my previous article, I mentioned that are a variety of items that I agree with the President on. Of course, many of you know that there are a slew of items in which I vehemently disagree with. So, without further adieu, here they are…

· Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

Our Secretary of State has done very well and very admirably under this current administration, most notably, her involvement in attempting to regain normal diplomatic relations with North Korea. While there are currently mixed reactions and results from new leadership apparatus in North Korea, it does allow hope for a future resolution to a decades old dispute between the Koreas. Much like Germany’s history of painstaking progress, the same slow progression is essential for reunification. It is this diplomacy and the resulting possible future for the Korean peninsula. Of course, Hillary Clinton is in good company with past Secretaries of State, such as Condolezza Rice and Madeline Albright, who have all helped in making the State Department one of the finest institutions that this country has to offer. Now, Secretary Clinton is addressing the issue of Syria, which has proven to be a very difficult one, almost as difficult as our current relationship with Israel. Of course, that is for another discussion.

· Removing “Pre-Existing Conditions” clauses from health insurance products

While most people are surprised that I support limited items in the new health care law, it shouldn’t be a surprise that most items I cannot support. However, the whole aim of President Obama’s campaign promise was to make healthcare accessible to everyone, not a mandate. In so doing, he could have prohibited the “Pre-Existing Conditions” clauses from all contracts, transferred healthcare funding to private insurance carriers (which are already heavily regulated) and provided tax incentives to obtaining healthcare coverage with no mandate. This would have paved the way for healthcare to be accessible to everyone and eliminated the need for a public mandate. In so doing, fraud would be lowered considerably since most private insurers are required to undergo periodic internal and state insurance department audits. So, I do agree with the President that healthcare should be available to everyone but only for those who want it on a voluntary basis. Otherwise, one must question the government’s influence over people’s lives.

· Killing of Osama Bin Laden

The President, of course, gets enormous credit for the killing of Osama Bin Laden. While I do not agree with the handling of the corpse, which the aftermath is still shrouded in mystery, I do agree that it was necessary in honor of previous administrations, such as Presidents Clinton and Bush.

So, there you have it folks, a few things I agree with the President on. Not earth shattering but, nevertheless, an important discovery from an independent thinker! :-D

I’ll write another article on the parting question from the last article: Do the Afghans appreciate what we have done for them?

Stay tuned…

Spotlight Endorses Mitt Romney

It has been quite a while since I last made an entry on my blog. For that, I do apologize. Now, on with the show…

First, I would like to announce I, along with many independents, have been disappointed about this primary cycle in the elections process. My biggest disappointment has been in Rick Perry and Herman Cain as they have not been able to find favor with voters. However, it goes to show that anything can happen in the world of politics. Before I offer my endorsement of a candidate in the Republican field, I must provide some much needed feedback to the media, especially one news organization.

Over the past year, MSNBC has acted most dishonorably and extremely biased. One example for this, the news organization openly and candidly questioned Herman Cain’s psychological stability in making decisions over our nuclear weapons arsenal. This is a complete slap in the face to everyone who has ever made the decision to run for office and officials already elected to public office, including our current President. Of course, not once did MSNBC bring a legitimate psychologist or counselor to provide their professional opinion on the subject. I don’t know about you, but I would not want any news organization to question your psychological stability while running for office, regardless of political ideology. The ploy is disingenuous and quite crass. As such, I call on everyone to boycott MSNBC and place all other news organizations on notice that we are watching them. We should demand all news organizations to provide fairness in all subjects.

Now with that out of the way, my endorsement for the Republican candidate is Mitt Romney. While I do believe that Rick Santorum is a great candidate, I do believe that he has made some very critical mistakes lately. As such, I cannot support Rick Santorum for the Republican Party. Mitt Romney has run before but was defeated by John McCain, which, in hindsight, was a complete mistake. However, Mitt Romney does have a few challenges, most notably the healthcare debacle. To me, Mitt Romney should repeal the law, now known as “Obamacare,” but there are some items in the healthcare law that I actually support.

I do support a discontinuance of the “pre-existing conditions” rule. Aside from that, there are a few items that I support that perhaps many have not discussed. Most importantly, allowing private insurers to receive government funds to eliminate fraud and ensure financial efficiency for future retirees. There is definitely a sect in politics where the idea that all private insurance companies are criminals. While this notion is not only laughable, since private insurance companies are heavily regulated by both state governments and the federal government; it is also irresponsible to refuse to trust the very institutions in which must still submit to said regulatory agencies that were enacted on a bipartisan level from previous state legislative bodies and federal congresses. As such, I think Mitt Romney would have a plan to weed through these murky waters to ensure that our healthcare system is stabilized for future retirees.

As a result of the Mitt Romney’s projected win in the Illinois Republican Primary, I think it is quite clear that Romney will have achieved the Republican nomination.

So, now that leaves us with the question of a contest between Mitt Romney and President Obama. This is where you come in.

Despite popular opinion, there are a few things that Obama has done well. Of course, as with any politician, there are items in which I vehemently disagree with. To find out what I agree with President Obama on, you would need to wait until my next article on my blog.

Until then, I leave you with this one item to think about…

Do the Afghans really appreciate what we, the American people, have done for them?

Birthday Reflection

Before I begin, thanks to all my friends and family for wishing me a happy birthday. I am probably almost at the point where people try to conceal their true age. LOL. Anyway, it is my 32nd birthday, if you are dyslexic then I am 23. LOL. :-)

Another year, gone, just like that. Each birthday, I reflect upon the past year and determine what goals were accomplished this past year and what should be the goal next year.

At first, I was disappointed in myself on a variety of fronts. While it is easy to blame the economy on where I stand financially however, some of it, is my own fault. I admit that. However, I have always said that money is not the answer to all problems.

So, upon looking at other aspects of my life, I think I have done fairly well. However, there is still something missing in my equation. This missing piece, which will remain nameless at this time, will be the focus for my next year.

While I am happy about turning 32, there is still more left to do. It is this void that I wish to fill on the new year of me. After all, everyone’s time on this Earth is numbered. It is important that one tries to make the best of it.

Again, thanks to my friends and family for the many wonderful birthday wishes. I have the greatest set of friends and family in the entire universe. :-D

Libya's transitional leader declares liberation, Sharia Law

Libya's transitional leader declares liberation, Sharia Law:
Libya has become liberated from Gadhafi and as Americans we should be very grateful for this. There was no question that Gadhafi had to go in some way.

However, America cannot continue to push for regime change if what we get in return is something much worse. Case in point, the article indicates that in the same breath of victory, they declare Sharia Law is in effect while thanking the United States, European Union, and NATO for helping them accomplish that. Excuse me? I thought we were pushing for democracy in Libya not the Iranian version of what a society is to be. In many ways, this President has failed to live up to our American interests in foreign policy. Obama, either knowingly or unknowingly, has further destabilized the Middle East and calls into question his motives. Meanwhile, Israel, our greatest friend, is now further in danger with this result in Libya. It does not matter what political ideology you are with, we cannot allow a destabilized Middle East. We must be on the side of freedom and democracy.

I don’t know about you, but I will be watching the planned Iraq withdrawal very closely to see what happens next in the political atmosphere there.

We should also look at Iran’s involvement as it seems very suspicious that the Libyan transitional council has made such a sweeping draconian decision instead of a democratic one.

We probably should have never supported the rebels in Libya in the first place. To me, the end result is much worse than a Gadhafi regime.

Corpus Christi Resident Accused in Assassination Plot

Corpus Christi Resident Accused in Assassination Plot:
The Mexican media has presented clear evidence over the years that has indicated growing concerns that terrorists have been assembling in Mexico. Their goal being to infiltrate the U.S. border with ulterior motives (i.e. terrorist attacks and plots). While there are many statements Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has issued that I disagree with, there is a consistent one that I do agree with. Everyone should be vigilant of any and all suspicious activities and report such activities to the proper authorities.

This is a wake-up call to everyone, especially the Corpus Christi area, that this sort of thing can happen literally anywhere and at anytime.

Romney Vs. Religion: A Non-Issue

I was watching some of the news today about Romney and his religious persuasion. While I have disagreements with the Mormon faith, there is nothing wrong with someone who has convictions for that faith. It serves absolutely no purpose to question this. The only condition I have as a voter is their dedication to representing all people of differing points of view and faith.

In the end:

Public policy in Washington can help our economy not a person’s faith

Unemployment is an economic problem that affects all people from all faiths.

Candidates win elections based on their political platform not their faith.

Anyone can win public support.

So, in the final analysis, this whole issue is complete nonsense. Everyone should dismiss this as a distraction from the real issues facing our country and our economy.

Steve Jobs

The world lost an incredible technology leader. While I have disagreements with Apple, appropriate credit must be given.

Steve Jobs created revolutionary products that has literally changed the way we approach technology innovation. He definitely created entire new industries thanks to iPhone, iPad, and iTunes.

Steve Jobs will be missed immensely in the technology industry.

The Slow Disappearance of the American Working Man

The Slow Disappearance of the American Working Man:
Take a look at this article. It is clear, we as a nation, have much more improvement needed for years to come.

Hurricane Irene - East Coast Likely in Path

As Hurricane Irene makes its way to the east coast of the United States, it is a very dangerous situation for anyone in its path. To my East Coast friends, I would like to reiterate the need to take all precautions and warnings very seriously. While our forecasting of these storms have improved, it is still very unpredictable and very dangerous. Please take a moment to review recommended items needed during an emergency at http://www.ready.gov

It is my hope that everyone in the affected areas are safe and free from harm.

S&P downgrades United States Debt

What came as a surprise to many individual Americans on Friday night, the Standard & Poor’s have downgraded the United States credit rating for the first time ever.

Today, Wall Street responded very harshly with rampant selloff on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq. The Dow Jones Industrial Average losing more than 600 points today alone with very heavy transaction volumes.

Earlier today, President Obama addressed the American people earlier today but again did not provide any real solutions. Instead, what the American people received was the same blame game and political posturing over who is to blame. In the final analysis, everyone is to blame. The important question is where do we go from here. So far, the only significant news received today was the supposed probe of Standard & Poor’s agency by the Senate Banking Committee. Honestly, the probe is another example of wasteful spending and frivolous government actions. Congress should concentrate their actions to how to get America out of this debt mess. So far, a probe of Standard & Poor’s will result in absolutely nothing to our credit rating.

So, in the end, we are in for additional hard times, economically speaking.

It is time to face the music and reform Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. More than half of the federal government’s budget is used to support these programs. I am not sure about you but the fact that almost 50% of all Americans do not pay any federal taxes is another example of the ineffectiveness of the Internal Revenue Service (I.R.S.).

Let’s eliminate the payroll tax, personal income tax returns, and the I.R.S., as we know it today. Let’s place a national sales tax based on the State Sales Tax models already in existence today. This way, everyone gets taxed only for what you buy (excluding “pure food” products).

I endorse the Fair Tax movement as it provides a good framework in which to implement real changes to our tax system.

http://www.fairtax.org

"Mr. President, tear down these walls of cynicism and rhetoric!
The USA was never intended to be a land of handouts but, rather assisting those who need it the most.

The USA was never intended to be the world’s police force but rather we use our military forces to ensure others find peace and dignity of human rights, in addition to protecting America’s safety.

The USA was never intended to be a world superpower but rather its power and strength come from its constituents, its people, and most importantly, its voters.

As we look at the USA today, we see that rising costs, inflation, and bleak forecasts for the future are having a significant toll on America’s people. This is why voting is very important. Everyone should vote and have a say in what happens to the future of America. We should recognize that all our elected officials have a responsibility to represent our interests. If they do not, we force them out in the most famous of American traditions, the American voting process.

The USA is at another pivotal point in history, a point in history which Americans must decide on a direction to take.

Ask yourself these important questions:

Has my elected official conducted himself/herself by making the right decisions and choices?

Has my elected official listened to my letters or concerns regarding a particular vote?

Has my elected official been involved in unethical behavior?

Has my elected official forgotten where he/she came from? (your particular district)

Has my elected official supported laws in which were struck down by the courts?

Has my elected official failed to curtail and reduce spending?

All of these and many other objective questions should and must be answered based on their voting record and administrative actions. No one is above these questions when it comes to deciding who to place in office, not even the President of the United States.

We must realize that America is in financial difficulty and we must ensure that her interests (your interests) are, indeed, addressed. The world still needs a strong America. We still need a strong America.

The end of this upcoming week also marks a sad day for the history of American innovation, the retirement of the Space Shuttle Fleet. As the last shuttle liftoff is scheduled to occur by the end of this week, it brings much sadness to me as the Space Shuttle Fleet would not have been realized if it were not for the forward thinking of past Presidents of the United States starting with John F. Kennedy. I do have an affinity for him as he started it and his successors modernized the space shuttle program into the most prestigious space operations in the world. As the government continues to find ways in which to cut spending, we must not forget to restart the space shuttle program and ensure that our elected officials realize that the space program is another symbol of our American pride and a true testament to the innovative spirit of America.

So, that brings us to the issue of our financial future. Our elected officials must make the difficult decision of reducing spending and finding ways to make our currency stronger. We should tell our congressmen and congresswomen, state assemblies, and governors that the need for more fiscally sound approaches to our money is long overdue. America is still needed. A fiscally unstable government is irresponsible and should not be tolerated at all.

America is still the greatest country on earth; it is our job as constituents that our elected leaders get the message regardless of their political affiliation.

Down but not out

In a truly remarkable game today at Disch-Faulk Field in Austin, Texas, the 3A State Semi-Finals proved to be an exhilarating one. Unfortunately, Robstown was eliminated by a 4-3 score versus Kennedale today.

We wish Kennedale the best as they advance to the State 3A Championship game.

However, Robstown deserves a great deal of credit for aggressively trying to win this game. It is quite clear to me that Robstown will be back again next year. I have no doubt in my mind about it.

Robstown has worked very hard to get to this point and certainly deserve a round of applause. Most people did not think Robstown had a chance to go as far as it did and counted them out so quickly. I say don’t count them out just yet.

Congratulations to my alma mater, Robstown High School Cotton Pickers, for a job well done!

BELIEVE

The Edge of Greatness

I congratulate the Robstown High School Cottonpicker baseball team for being crowned the Region 4 champions. Now, Robstown advances to the Semi-Finals in the State Baseball Tournament in Austin. The last time Robstown appeared at the State Tournament was in 1993, in which they won the State Championship. It was certainly a long time ago. An entire generation grew up without ever repeating that honor.

As for the community of fans, they never stopped believing in their high school baseball team. They have always supported the Robstown High School Cottonpickers from the very beginning. So, of course, the community is quite excited that years of hard work from the players and coaches has paid off.

I was on the Corpus Christi Caller-Times chat room earlier today and noticed that some people thought the score was too high and Robstown was being too aggressive with the stealing of bases when it was apparent Robstown would win. I say that it is important for Robstown to remain aggressive in their game and not let their guard down. The other three region champions will no doubt remain aggressive in their games.

Still, others in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times chat room were saying that Robstown’s high school baseball team is of meager caliber and the advancement is a symbol that the region overall is weak. I disagree completely with this notion. It is important to note that other teams in our area have never received such feedback as they move on to the state tournament in their conferences. It is also safe to say that most sane people will not agree that the various teams that made it to the State Tournament are undeserving. The statement and implication made by some in the chat room are certainly undeserving of any real credibility.

It is quite clear that Robstown is in a position to take the State Championship. As we all know, one must have a burning desire in order to win championships. In Robstown’s case, they must step up their aggression and seize their opportunity to make history again.

Robstown has operated with a simple motto: BELIEVE. Believe that great things are possible. In the case of the other regions, believe that Robstown will not go down without a fight.

Best of luck to the Robstown High School Cottonpickers! You are on the edge of greatness. You are on the edge of glory.

Shakes, Quakes, and ... Hurricanes?

The past few months have been incredible with massive earthquakes and huge tornados. Unfortunately, we cannot control nature (we never could anyway). However, we can control how we respond to such catastrophes. People worldwide and across our great nation have made generous contributions to the various charities that are assisting the victims of these terrible natural disasters. Despite the economy, it is quite clear that people still care about others.

Unfortunately, given the size and scope of the tornado activity just in the month of May, we can expect some significant activity during the upcoming hurricane season, which starts next week (June 1).

Some tips to remember for the upcoming hurricane season:

Take all hurricane and severe weather warnings seriously. Hurricanes (just like tornados) are highly unpredictable.

Start preparing your emergency plan and kit. Go to http://www.ready.gov now to find out more about this.

Remain calm. While it is important to follow all warnings, it is completely unnecessary to panic. Panic is contagious. If one does it, others may do so, as well. What does that accomplish, really?

Be safe out there, and always have a plan!
